Chat screening

Max can chat with candidates to prescreen them for human interviews

Tezi’s AI Max can conduct a screening interview via chat, using your screening questions while also answering candidate questions about your company and role. After the conversation, you receive a summary and transcript to help decide whether to advance the candidate.

Tezi’s sourcing and inbound screening, while powerful, are limited to standard profile information (e.g., resumes, LinkedIn, etc.). Use the chat screen to collect deeper insights on candidate fit and to help save time on phone screens.

Setup

On your role setup page:

1️⃣ Configure screening questions

Select Screening questions to set up the chat screen:

  • Select the candidate source types that should be screened by Max.
    • Inbound: Max automatically advances qualified inbound applicants who meet your criteria to the chat screen. Inbound screening must also be enabled.
    • Sourced: Max automatically advances interested sourced candidates to the chat screen. Sourcing must also be enabled.
    • Referred: Max sends a chat screen invite to any referrals that you add directly to the Chat Screen stage.
  • Edit Tezi’s template screening questions or provide your own.
    • Max asks all questions in the order that you set. To maintain consistent evaluations across candidates, it does not adapt questions based on candidate responses.
    • We recommend using yes/no or short-answer questions when possible to minimize candidate dropoff.

2️⃣ Provide Tezi with hiring context

Provide Tezi with information on your role and/or company so Max can answer common candidate questions during the chat screen, as well as help sell your role.

3️⃣ 🔗 Users with 3rd-party ATS integration only: Create a chat screen stage in your ATS

Add an ATS stage for the chat screen, such as “Chat Screen by Max (Tezi).” Tezi moves candidates into this stage when they are advanced to the chat screen, helping track funnel progress. Generally, this should be the last stage before the first human interview.

Tezi Support may help create this stage when connecting the role to Tezi.

4️⃣ Go live on the role

After you’ve set up all the Tezi features you’re interested in—including but not necessarily limited to inbound screening—Go live on the role. Max will start conducting chat screens with relevant candidate types, as well as take any other automatic actions that you have configured.

Users with 3rd-party ATS integration: You cannot self-serve activating a role due to the depth and complexity of Tezi’s ATS integration. Reach out to Tezi Support to go live on your role.

Chat screen in action

Based on the candidate source types that you configured to receive the chat screen, Max automatically invites the appropriate candidates to the chat screen and follows up if they do not respond. Invited candidates receive an email to enter the interactive chat experience with Max.

After a candidate completes the chat screen, Max flags the candidate to you for a decision on whether to advance to a human interview. Learn more about possible candidate flows.

You can review Tezi’s summary of the chat as well as the full transcript in the candidate’s Activity Feed.

Ongoing optimization

1️⃣ Monitor completion rates

In the Pipeline tab under the Chat Screen stage, pay attention to candidates invited to the chat screen who never complete it. Consider reaching out directly to individual high-priority candidates, or if completion rates are consistently low, disable the chat screen for specific source types or entirely.

2️⃣ Refine your questions

Review completed chat screens to assess whether you're getting the right level of detail, and add new questions or refine existing ones as needed. Shorter, more focused questions typically see better completion rates.

3️⃣ Expand Max's knowledge base

When candidates ask questions that Max can't answer, add that information to your role and/or company context. This ensures Max provides helpful responses in the future.

FAQ

Can I choose which candidates to send the chat screen to?

If you use the chat screen, Max automatically sends chat screen invitations to candidates according to their source type and the logic above. This automation cannot be disabled.

For candidates who weren’t automatically invited by Max, you can send a chat screen invite by moving the candidate to the Chat Screen stage, as long as the chat screen is enabled for their source type.

How can I turn off the chat screen?

To disable the chat screen, unselect all candidate source types in the Screening questions page of role setup. Max will stop inviting new candidates to the chat screen. Previously invited candidates may still complete the chat.
